The Sugarhill Gang sprung forth from New Jersey, USA in 1979. Its members include Master Gee, Wonder Mike and Big Bank Hank who united to mix hip-hop, rap and old school vibes. Their anthemic 12″ Rapper’s Delight masterpiece took the beat from the heart of Chic’s epic Good Times and swathed it in entertaining and never to be forgotten lyrics that offered the poetical observations of the trio. Other cult singles followed such as Apache and 8th Wonder but that barnstorming 15 minute masterpiece that paved the way for a generation offers cult status and The Sugarhill Gang are leading proceedings at the Depot in the Park Festival at the SSE Swalec Stadium, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on Saturday, August 5, 12 noon to 10pm
Sadly, Big Bank Hank is no longer with us but the other central figures joined by Hen Dogg are still a popular live attraction as was shown at their 2016 Tramshed date in the Welsh capital. There are also a number of other performers on a bill that promises diligent variety and summer joy! Included in that number is The Hackney Colliery Band, DJ Greg Wilson, The Mariachis, The Limited and more. There are also food and drink stalls among a bevy of attractions, including a host of family fun.
