There is a real Sham 69 out there and also a version that in essence is no more than a tribute band trading under the same name. The 1977 original line up is the item that has the real deal tag as Jimmy Pursey (frontman and face of the nascent act) is present and correct! Pursey is also joined by other early era Sham compatriots in the form of Dave Parsons and Dave Tregunna-and, this trio represent those glory days of lighting up Top of the Pops on a Thursday evening!
The Pursey product brought a string of hit singles including five Top 20 hits during 1978-79 and that includes the anthem If the kids are United. Three Top 30 albums also scored during the same period to make Sham 69 one of the most commercially viable punk bands.
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since those distant years–but as we stand a contemporary combo has Robin Guy making up the quartet and as a live entity Sham 69 still have power, passion and purpose! The live shows have been critically acclaimed and there is a chance for Welsh fans to see Pursey and his people at The Tramshed, Cardiff on Friday, November 4, 2016, 7.30pm.
