60 ICONIC HITS THAT DEFINED THE HIPPIE GENERATION
SLEEVENOTES WRITTEN BY NME’S KEITH ALTHAM – WHO WAS THERE TO WITNESS IT
THE OFFICIAL SUMMER OF LOVE ALBUM
To mark the 50th Anniversary of the ‘Summer of Love’, Universal Music is proud to present the Official Album, ‘60s Summer of Love’, celebrating one of the most important musical and cultural movements of the twentieth century.
The 3CD / 60 track collection leads with The Mamas & The Papas ‘California Dreaming’, one of the defining songs of the era. The Mamas & The Papas played at the Monterey Festival 50 years ago this month (Jun 16th – 18th 1967), an event that is widely recognised as the starting point of the legendary ‘Summer of Love’.
The album also features a wealth of bands and songs that have become synonymous with the era: The Beach Boys have two classics ‘Good Vibrations’ and ‘I Get Around’. The Monkees ‘I’m A Believer’, The Animals, House of the Rising Sun’ (The Animals also played at Monterey in ’67), Cat Stevens ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’, The Kinks ‘Waterloo Sunset’, Small Faces ‘Itchycoo Park’ and many more.
The sleeve notes to this collection have been written by the only British music journalist who was there: Keith Altham, then features editor at the NME.
“In June 1967 I flew to America for the Monterey Festival with Jimi Hendrix, for whom I invented guitar flambe, and flew back with The Who. This was the best of times and included here are many of the 32 acts playing on that first Pop Festival for free… Those were happy days my friends. Here they are again.” (Keith Altham, sleeve notes)
