The Worker’s Art & Design Gallery, Ynyshir is on the site of the old library in the area. Gayle Rogers along with Chris Williams are to the fore of this fantastic enterprise that exhibits and also sells a range of arts, crafts and accessories (such as books, cards and trinkets).
As well as the array of splendid endeavour there are also social events and under the banner of WAM (Words Art Music) the month of April offered another diverse presentation.
WORDS
Phil Carradice used his expertise as a broadcaster, writer and historian to discuss poetry and prose associated with World War 1. This pertinent chat also took in to account that is 100 years since the close of hostilities. Phil discussed how battle has been perceived by wordsmiths and there were some interesting disclosures.

Louise Collis displayed her skills as a plein art painter and outlined how she sets about her outdoor painting – including her inspiring project of producing a work of art every day for a whole year. This fabulous achievement and many others puts this talented lady on a pedestal – and, if you are in the Abergavenny area pop in to her studio and admire the diligent endeavour.

MUSIC
Penygraig musician Matthew Frederick is both a solo act and also a member of popular band, Climbing Trees. Matthew offered two sets of tunes. The opening section was guitar led in the style of his favoured Cymru-cana with a slant towards melancholic folksy ballads. Matthew then returned to sit at a keyboard and lead a more bluesy section and it is patently obvious that this chap can both play and sing. He is also capable of entertaining banter in between songs and that capped off a fine evening of entertainment and learning.

However, the glue that unites all of the variety is the always lively and totally absorbing peronality of writer and performer Mike Church. MC the MC throws his own energetic slant on proceedings while also cracking a few gags and putting an enthusiastic audience at ease. It would be worth popping along just to see Mr C in action so this entity plus a whole host of other extras means that the next gathering on Thursday, May 3 at 7pm is a must.

NB Chris Williams has designed and crafted the all important chair for this year’s Eisteddfod – and there is obvious excitement about the kudos of this situation.
