Tomorrow it’s the Davis Cup World Group Play off. Running until the 15th of September, the Davis Cup this year features our best British team. If we win, we’ll make it into the World Group for the 2014 Davis Cup – and we really, really want to do this.
During the 13-15 September there will be various Davis Cup matches going on, including the semis for the 2013 Davis Cup, which will feature the number one in the world player Novak Djokovic playing for Serbia against Canada.
Sadly, we don’t have the luxury of playing Croatia at home and the team will be playing at Stadion Stella Maris in Croatia. And the team is made up of our very own Wimbledon champ Andy Murray, along with Dan Evans, Colin Fleming, James Ward and the captain (who isn’t playing) Leon Smith.
For any tennis fans, it’s already well known that this is a biggie for the British team. Great Britain last played in the World Group way back in 2008, which means for five long years they’ve been out of the top 16 teams. This is not a situation we want to continue.
Leon Smith has been quoted as saying: “We are delighted to be sending our strongest possible team to Umag in what will be a very tough tie. Croatia are former winners of the Davis Cup and currently ranked No. 11 in the world.”
So they may be a tough team to beat, but on paper, Great Britain is most definitely the stronger team and it could definitely be worth putting your best on Great Britain to make it into next year’s finals. The fact that the games will be on clay and not grass could give Croatia some advantage but, even with this against us, and having to play away, it’s still winnable for Great Britain. Croatia and Britain have only met once in the past, back in 2007 at Wimbledon where we won easily 4-1.
It’s worth keeping an eye out for the odds for the Davis Cup itself as it’s also worth betting on. At the moment most have the odds as Serbia at 8/15, Argentina at 9/2, Canada at 20/1 and Czech Republic at 7/2.
